Here’s the Canonical List of the Twitter Stuff People Are Doing That I F*ckin’ Hate:

  • Retweeting themselves
  • Allowing regular messages in their timeline from “My Tweet Followers”
  • Asking for RTs on lame quotes or MLM links
  • Asking for RTs on ANYTHING repeatedly
  • Telling me where they’re eating and what they’re having
  • Trolling for political arguments
  • Using abusive language
  • Having a one-on-one conversation in their timeline
  • Having any kind of converstation with in-jokes
  • Begging for followers when near some “milestone”

Most of this stuff was considered among the “mortal sins” of Usenet. Now here we are, watching history repeat itself. And these are the sins of people who actually follow you back! Don’t even get me started on those worthless others.

But hey, there’s good news! The Georgia rock band Collective Soul doesn’t do any of that! They are actually the Anti-Twitter-Stuff-I-F*ckin-Hate!

Here’s just a few of the things these talented rockstar geniuses do to engage the world:

  • They keep a list of their favorite Twitter-based fans, complete with ID and avatar for each.
  • Even though they’re a bit behind on their blog, it’s fully-functional and they’re drawing people to it. I think something’s gonna happen there, and they’ve just been waiting for the bigger audience they’re drawing.
  • Every band has a schedule available online. These guys go the extra step: they offer tickets to fans with the best blog posts. That’s what every band should be doing. (Pick me! Pick me! LOL)
  • They genuinely love and openly engage their fans via Twitter. And let’s face it: this is a much safer strategy than engaging fans out in the meatspace, right? It’s a win-win! LOL

It’s not just the rock bands, and not just the celebrities, who could learn (though I suspect most won’t, as they’re not so much interested in learning) from this example: it’s all of us. So waste no time! Let’s get to it!

I f*ckin’ love Twitter. :-) :-) :-)
